Armillary Sphere Series 2020

The Armillary Spheres Series is based on capturing shadows cast by the Sun. I see these as drawings by the Sun. The Armillary Sphere is an ancient astronomical instrument used to track the positions of the Sun and other celestial objects through each day, throughout the year. Capturing the Sun's shadow, as it draws a momentary mark upon the Earth, expands a snapshot in time into an eternal moment. The constant ebb and flow of shadows connect us to the flow of time, as all past and future moments are held by the present.

 Achnabreck series 2019

In May 2019, I visited the Kilmartin Valley in western Scotland. I was captivated by the ring and cup drawings made by Neolithic people (c. 2000-3000BCE) on the rocks. For me, these circular forms speak at a visceral level to something deep within the human psyche. Some rocks in the Kilmartin Valley are etched on, others are arranged as standing stones linked to celestial time kept by the Sun and Moon. The circles and spiral forms somehow connect the celestial timescales to the human cycle of life and death. The ancient drawings lie next to cracks and crevices etched into the rocks by deep time.  They are joined by the circular patterns of living lichen. The Kilmartin rocks are TIME MACHINES: nature has etched her marks over millions of years. Nature’s drawings are joined by human drawings, connecting us in our present moment to our ancestors.
