Cultural Collisions

April 2018, spearheaded by CERN physicist and photographer Michael Hoch, and hosted by the Ontario Science Centre, in collaboration with the Ontario Ministry of Education, and collaborating partners from CERN, Perimeter, LIGO, University of Toronto Physics, Canada Light Source.

As past of Cultural Connections, I was invited to give interdisciplinary workshops to high school students inspired by the rich imagery of astronomy. Students were given a short lecture on Celestial Luminescence, then worked with fluorescent paints to generate images inspired by our glowing Universe. The physics behind the fluorescent paints is a physical and material analogy for the way objects like nebulae generate their light and glow. Using art to engage students with science provides a non-traditional pathway for exploring scientific ideas and phenomena.
